This Cartoon Life: Harry Hargreaves Books

I have long been a fan of Harry Hargreaves cartoon artwork. So I was pleased to get my hands on this little gem of book featuring his popular little character the Bird. It is an old book early 60's and cost at the time 7s 6d equivalent of 38 pence (37 and a half to be exact) these days. The drawings are pen and ink with some brush work and all have a great energy and humour in them. Well worth the sum significantly more than 38 pence which I paid for the book

Here is sample of the cartoons inside

I used to follow Hargreaves in my early teens in my dad's newspaper - I absolutely loved his work. I made handdrawn copies of about 8 of them, mostly birds but also an angry orangutan and a guilty polar bear dad, which I still have. I showed them to a friend today which inspired a search to find out more about him. I didn't know he'd published a book, I would love to find one but it sounds pretty rare!

I have a cartoon of the fox that Harry Hargreaves used to draw for Discs A gogo. It is for the song Gypsy Rover and he drew it for me when I was very ill in hospital in 1960 he lived near my village and came in my Dad's shop.spers
